TRIP LEADER'S NAME: Peter Symons ( 1577 )
DESCRIPTION/LOCATION: The last Simpson Desert trip we did was such a great experience on so many levels that we thought it was time to do it again. At this stage, the plan is for a three-week trip, starting and finishing in Melbourne. We would drive from Melbourne to Hahndorf, mainly to break up the drive and, more importantly, to stop for a kitchener bun. From there we would continue on to Coober Pedy, spending some time exploring the area before heading north to Mt Dare. After refuelling and final preparations at Mt Dare, we would head east across the Simpson Desert, potentially via the QAA Line, finishing in Birdsville. Once in Birdsville, the usual formalities would apply — a beer at the pub, the obligatory photo out the front, refuel, and a general vehicle check. From Birdsville, the plan would be to head back west to Mt Dare, likely via the French Line, making this a full desert crossing in both directions (route choices are very much open for discussion). After returning to Mt Dare, we would make our way south to Marree, with the option of doing a scenic flight over the Marree Man if conditions and interest allow. From Marree, it’s then the long run back to Melbourne and the unavoidable return to normal life. The outline above is not set in stone. Route choices, timing, and side trips will be discussed with those coming along — partly to make sure everyone is happy, and partly so responsibility can be evenly shared if something goes wrong.

Would you like to be able to do simple mechanical repairs with a degree of understanding that you have not experienced before. Know that the parts you are spending your money on are actually needed and are being fitted to the car. Then come and participate in our mechanical awareness course.
Topics covered will be basic operation of your vehicle to give you a better understanding of how it all works; this can lead to you being able to tackle simple maintenance and repair tasks yourself e.g.
Tool identification and use, brake pad changing, oil and filter & other service items, minor electrical work are just some of the tasks you will be able to perform at the completion of the course. There is also a large amount of practical training not just theory involved in the course and in a lot of cases you will be able to perform work on your own vehicle. We are seeking members with track clearing experience to work in small teams with the Parks staff to close all gates in the Bendoc Parks office’s area of responsibility. Initial planning suggests that we are looking for 7-9 vehicles.
Participants can expect a full day of closing gates on Saturday with a half day on Sunday. It is a fast paced trip as we need to close all gates in a park in a single day. It will likely be a busy weekend of work but experience says that it's always a great weekend away.
You must have previously attended the annual track clearing to attend this trip.
Pending final plans from Parks, members need to be prepared to be mobile and camp out on the track. At this stage, swags or tents only. The meeting point will be in Bendoc or the Deddick Valley area but is TBA pending final plans. Members need to be ready to for an 8am briefing on Saturday morning. Arrival on Friday afternoon or evening is strongly recommended. Further details on camping arrangements and meeting places will be provided to participants in the week or two prior to the trip.
If plans allow for participants to be in Bendoc for Saturday night, we will organise dinner at the Pub for anybody interested. The Bendoc Pub was reopened a few years ago and it's become a real hub for the community. Great atmosphere and the meals are great. The parma is plate sized.
There are prerequisites that we must adhere to. Participants must 1. Have completed their proficiency training; 2. Have a current WWCC (working with children check); 3. Hold chainsaw certification and use full PPE if operating a chainsaw; and 4. Have attended the Club's track clearing or track opening trip previously.
Last fuel is at Buchan, Orbost or Delegate, NSW (limited availability).
If you don’t have a current WWCC, the application can be done from your phone at home and only takes about 10 minutes.
Participants need to be prepared for all conditions. Be prepared for cold and wet conditions and bring all your food, water, camping and cooking gear for the weekend. We are camping in an alpine environment, it may snow (it snowed last year)

TRIP LEADER'S NAME: Mel Herron (2098)
DESCRIPTION/LOCATION: As part of this joint Land Care -Rotary-Pajero Club Tree Planting Program which is now in its 31st year to help reduce "the salinity problem" in the Goulburn/Murray River system by planting trees and increasing the areas capacity to recover the biodiversity and to restart the natural cycle in this area. The Native trees and shrubs are propagated from locally collected seeds in the Glenaroua district. the trees are planted by Land Management and other community groups. Our club is one of its strongest members. We not only assist with the preparation of the tree guards and the tree planting, also assist in the transportation of the participants to the planting site and return them back to a base and assist in the distribution of plants and tools. This has been a long-term program by SWG Landcare across the whole district for many years.A corridor link of approximately 2.5km long will be created as it grows and will create a ‘stepping stone’ across the landscape, which is critical habitat for species trying to move safely from one area to another. It will add much needed food source and shelter to native species and it will create a windbreak and shade for the sheep & cattle that the farmers grow; from the outside they can move around to gain shelter. This project Is bringing landholders into Landcare projects – which usually means they will do more works in the future as they see the overall benefits to their property and for their stock. It’s amazing how many landowners are affected by seeing such things as birds they have never seen before and this helps push them to do more environmental works.Salinity and erosion control – will especially assist where erosion is present, signs of salinity leaching out of the creek during periods of wet weather. The community comradery cannot be understated with this long term project between all the parties – it’s very much looked forward too by many parties on the weekend, and especially the Pajero club's presence for their experience in the tree planting project and for the assistance of transportation of participants, plants and to and from the site. The main transportation and planting day will be on the Sunday the 21st of June, on the property of the Burgess Rural.Saturday 20th of June is when all the preparation of the plants, guards, sorting of the trees, placing them on site, and if time permits we will begin planting on Saturday afternoon as we did last year. The preparation will take place at the Shearers Shed 915 Broadford-Glenaroua Rd Glenaroua. Our members are also asked to join in these preparations on the Saturday.Last Year’s owners have again extended an invitation and is offering their modern Shearers shed with accommodation. (The facility is located at 915 Broadford-Glenaroua Rd Glenaroua and will be available from Friday afternoon for those wanting to set up for the Weekend). There are 4 rooms, Kitchen facilities, bathroom and modern toilets. Basically, two persons per room. The shearers shed area also has a large flat grassed area it will accommodate several vans campers, Swags etc. Vans and Campers to be fully self-contained and have own power. Check with me for availability. For the Saturday attendees, if you are able, tree preparation will commence from 9.30am at the Shearers Shed. A light morning tea and lunch will be provided for both Saturday & Sunday. In the evening no plans have been made at this stage. Please let me know if you would like to book a room, or set up camper tents Etc.Landcare provide the specialised equipment for this planting weekend activity, so there is no requirement to bring any tools or equipment, but you will need to bring strong footwear, gardening gloves, warm clothing and rainwear in case of inclement weather. Planting activities will conclude around lunch time and will be followed by BBQ Lunch provided by the local Rotary Club. The Pajero Club over the past 30 years have been an integral part of the success of this plan coming to realisation. This is a great day where members and the families and friends can come along and be part of a very thankful local community. The planting Activity requires Teams of 3 or 41 Planting1 or 2 Placing & sinking Tree Guards1 Supporting Tube guards, Stakes etc.Duties to be rotated between the teamWe need commitment, as without our transport and more importantly planting assistance this event cannot proceed. There is no limit to the number of members & friends you want to bring.Medical envelopes. Only one required. Please hand to Barry Walker on the Day as he is the registrar. Thanks Fred Farrugia on behalf of Melinda Herron
