DESCRIPTION/LOCATION: This is a trip to run through the Deep Creek tracks near Walhalla area. I haven't done it for a long time and have heard they have become much more difficult. Winching may be required from what I have been told. We will air down it the starting point. Then cross the river below the dam wall (depending what is coming out of the spillway) and go up Beardmores track. Ten on to Deep Creek 1,4,5,2. That depends how much winching we do. I am taking my old Paj so I do not expect to have to winch anywhere (I bet I regret that comment). Some of the trip will be National Park so bringing a dog may be a problem. Advised not to unless it stays in your car.

DESCRIPTION/LOCATION: Once again, we visit the Grandeur of the Grampians, otherwise known as Gariwerd National Park. This will be the ninth trip to the Grampians aimed at exploring some of the 168,000 hectares of natural attractions the park has to offer. The trip will traverse some elements of one of 4WD Victoria's Iconic 4WD Adventures: “Grampians Drive”. We'll traverse a variety of roads and tracks by vehicle and on foot to: visit lookouts; view waterfalls; explore heritage sites; and undertake spectacular scenic drives. Most roads should be open but some might be closed because of damage due to washouts and recent fires, but by the time the trip takes place it is anticipated (and hoped) that most of those roads will be repaired or cleared and open. Where roads and tracks do remain closed alternative roads and tracks will be substituted without detracting from the overall trip. We'll venture into the park each morning, so bring your morning tea and lunch, (also the binoculars and the camera). We’ll return to the comforts and amenity of the caravan park each afternoon for happy hour, so don't forget to pack the nibbles and refreshments. All comers are welcome, especially those who haven’t yet participated in a trip, this is also a chance for caravan owners to kick out the blocks and get the wheels rolling. Should there be sufficient interest, as demonstrated by the length of the wait list, a second group could be arranged, so it’s worth registering on the wait list either for withdrawals or to initiate a second group. For those who would like occasional time out to relax locally, Halls Gap food and coffee shops are a popular, easy and pleasant walk away. The local hotel serves dinner and is a short, pleasant and easy walk away. Halls Gap is approximately 255 km from Melbourne via Ararat along the Western Highway, and Moyston/Pomonal via the Ararat/Halls Gap Road. The distance to be traveled in the national park will be around 100 km each day. Some 10 minute to 60 minute, easy to medium walks, to and from attractions will be involved, depending on conditions and situations with track closures. Some walks will involve clambering over easy rocky track sections and up easy rocky steps but the effort required may get rather physical for those with very low fitness levels. Make sure you wear sturdy footwear. Some roadworks should be anticipated on the Western Highway with varying speed zones, 40 - 60 - 80 kph and Stop/Go points. Fuel is available at Halls Gap or at Stawell on the Western Highway, 15 mins East of Halls Gap and on the Western Highway at various locations. DO NOT make any independent bookings until instructed to do so!

TRIP LEADER'S NAME: Peter Symons ( 1577 )
DESCRIPTION/LOCATION: The last Simpson Desert trip we did was such a great experience on so many levels that we thought it was time to do it again. At this stage, the plan is for a three-week trip, starting and finishing in Melbourne. We would drive from Melbourne to Hahndorf, mainly to break up the drive and, more importantly, to stop for a kitchener bun. From there we would continue on to Coober Pedy, spending some time exploring the area before heading north to Mt Dare. After refuelling and final preparations at Mt Dare, we would head east across the Simpson Desert, potentially via the QAA Line, finishing in Birdsville. Once in Birdsville, the usual formalities would apply — a beer at the pub, the obligatory photo out the front, refuel, and a general vehicle check. From Birdsville, the plan would be to head back west to Mt Dare, likely via the French Line, making this a full desert crossing in both directions (route choices are very much open for discussion). After returning to Mt Dare, we would make our way south to Marree, with the option of doing a scenic flight over the Marree Man if conditions and interest allow. From Marree, it’s then the long run back to Melbourne and the unavoidable return to normal life. The outline above is not set in stone. Route choices, timing, and side trips will be discussed with those coming along — partly to make sure everyone is happy, and partly so responsibility can be evenly shared if something goes wrong.
